History

David Yulee & James Archer

In the 1840's through the 1850's the town now known as Archer was called Deer Hammock, and later Darden's Hammock. Early settlers lived in small cabins and grew fruits and vegetables and hunted for their food. Their drinking water was supplied from a sinkhole in the area.

Maddox Foundry

Established in 1905 as a machine shop to service the local mining industry Maddox Foundry is now in its second century of operation. Archer is very grateful to the Maddox family for the support it has provided to the city throughout the years and is proud that this business calls Archer its home.

 T. Gilbert Pearson

T.Gilbert Pearson grew up in Archer studying wildlife and amassing a significant collection of bird specimens and eggs.  As a young man he went to Greensboro, NC to attend Guilford College. He paid for his education by giving the college his collection in return for tuition. Pearson later became a teacher at Guilford College and what is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

 Bo Diddley

Bo called Archer home for many years. He had a great love for our youth and was devoted to establishing a means of helping to make their lives better. He created the Bo Diddley Foundation to help accomplish that goal. The City of Archer is grateful to him for his contribution.
