Lightning Safety

  • If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to get struck by lightning
  • If you are outside with others, stay at least 15 feet apart from them so the lightning won't travel between you if you are hit
  • Make yourself the smallest possible target, squat with your hands on your knees and your head tucked

Hurricane Ready

  • Develop evacuation plan in advance, including routes and shelters
  • Find out if the shelter you have chosen allows pets
  • Create a family disaster supply kit: Battery Operated radio, flashlights, first aid kit, non-perishable food items, 3 day    water supply, non-electric can opener, medicines, cash and credit cards
  • Teach children to call 911 in case of an emergency
  • Know the proper way to protect your home during a storm
  • Pre-measure plywood panels to use when boarding your home's windows before a storm hits
