City of Archer- Archer Community Center Auditorium
Our
objective is to create a multi-purpose community center that can bring our
citizens and neighbors in the greater Archer and Alachua County communities
together.
RESTORATION
In
2003, the plan for the five acre parcel of land at the old Archer High School
site located on the corner of Church Street and Hwy 27/41 has been developed
through the Florida Community Design Center Volunteer Tom Smith and others
along with Commissioner Roberta C. Lopez, the City of Archer Commissioners and
Staff.
In
1936, the existing brick building was constructed under the Works Progress
Administration (WPA), and was originally the gymnasium for the old Archer High
School. It is a link to the history and memories of many of the residents of
Archer.
Broadly
conceived, the multi-purpose Community Center will be a gathering place for:
weddings/receptions, elderly programs, youth and teen activities, theatrical
and musical performances, club meetings, arts and crafts, indoor recreation,
and other special events.
In
2005, the City of Archer received $320,481 from the State of Florida Historic
Preservation. More than $350,000 in-kind and cash came from local
citizens, Alachua County Government, Corporations and friends of Archer to
assist with the restoration of the old gymnasium. With these funds we
were able to complete Phase I. The development Committee continues their
efforts to raise the necessary funds to complete Phase II and welcome your
support.
